Ithaca Tompkins International Airport

 

Ithaca Tompkins International Airport is the only airport located in Tompkins County, serving hundreds of thousands of passengers each year traveling to and from the region. ITH is a one-stop connection to over 750 global destinations through four connecting hubs; Washington-Dulles via United Airlines, Charlotte and Philadelphia via American Airlines and Detroit via Delta Airlines. Daily non-stop flights to and from these major hubs allow for both domestic and international travel. Just ten minutes from downtown Ithaca, ITH is a major gateway for students and families of Cornell University, Ithaca College, and TC3.

For over a decade Communiqué D & M Inc. has conducted nearly all aspects of marketing and PR for the Ithaca Tompkins International Airport, including a simple yet effective rebranding strategy. The ITH brand is a great example of making use of what you already have; we saw the potential of this three-letter airport code as more than just a drop-down menu selection, and instead let it evolve into its own identity. We have striven to showcase and elevate the unique intimacy of ITH, from creating an up-close video series with ITH personnel, to keeping the public updated on events through our management of social media platforms. Communiqué’s work for the airport has epitomized “integrated marketing”. From video and print campaigns, to radio spots, to website design, updates and maintenance, Communiqué has been not only responsive but also proactive to meet the needs of the ever-changing realm of aviation. We consistently produce content for engagement on social media, as well as blogs and vlogs for the ITH website.

Communiqué has also assisted in grant writing for ITH, which recently resulted in a 24.7 million dollar grant to renovate and revitalize the airport. The grant was awarded to ITH in October 2018 as part of the Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition, and will be used to expand the existing terminal by 50 percent, as well as the addition of six new gates and three passenger bridges. Through the construction process, Communiqué has worked to keep the community updated, informed, and engaged. In addition to grants, Communiqué has helped the airport secure and market new service, such as the daily non-stop service to and from Washington-Dulles via United Airlines, which was introduced October 4th, 2018 and has been outperforming forecasts.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Communiqué recognized the importance of positioning the newly renovated airport as a vital community asset. Working closely with the leadership team at ITH in conjunction with Tompkins County, Communiqué was able to ensure the airport remained relevant throughout the pandemic. Due to the continuation of air travel for essential reasons, it was crucial that the airport remain open and communicate its status to the external public.

Communiqué was committed to showcasing ITH’s efforts of keeping the terminal as clean as possible and providing customers with the most up to date health and safety information. Through the strategic use of social media and radio ads, we were able to reach our large audience and provide critical information.

Additionally, COVID-19 greatly impacted the Tompkins County community and left many in need of reliable child care resources. Communiqué identified this immense community need and partnered with the Ithaca Marriott Downtown on the Commons to present Moment of Movement: Giving Our Youth a Flying Start, a fundraiser to benefit United Way of Tompkins County and the Ithaca Youth Bureau. On September 26, nearly fifty community leaders participated in a workout led by trainers from FLX Fitclub while many others took part in the live-streamed workout at home. In total, the event raised $25,930, which went to providing child care and enrichment activity resources to families as well as helping employers retain their workforce.
